What is Wireless Internet?

Wireless Internet is a form of internet that can be accessed through a wireless signal from any computer. Your computer needs to be equipped with a modem or wireless card. The key benefit of wireless Internet is that the user is more mobile because access is city-wide.

Aren't DSL and Cable already available in most of the City? Why Wireless?

Even in areas where DSL and Cable Internet access is available, it is cost prohibitive for many residents and businesses. Also, DSL and Cable do not support nomadic, portable and mobile usage, which is increasingly important for residents, businesses, government, tourists and business travelers.

Will there be technical support for this product?

Will antenna or other equipment be required at a home or business to access the network?

Users with a wireless card in their computer, laptop or handheld device will be able to access the service while roaming throughout the City, with no additional equipment. A small, indoor modem may be required at any residence or business where service is requested.

Will this be an indoor or outdoor network?

While network equipment will be outdoors, wireless signals will be transmitted indoors to allow for residential and business access.

Will the network be secure?

The network will support varying levels of security, ranging from open, public access in certain parks and public spaces to highly secure use by residents, businesses and government agencies. The level of security will depend on the types of applications being used.

How fast will the network be?

While the network will not deliver a guaranteed speed connection, service is estimated at 1 megabit per second (Mbps) or greater upload and download or 3 Mbps download and 1Mbps upload.

What will I see when I log on?

You will see the Wireless Philadelphia SSID if you are in the City of Philadelphia and by clicking on this SSID you will be directed to our log in page.

Can I use this service when I am outside the City?

This service is available to you wherever you see the Feather SSID. Currently you can access the service in the following cities at NO EXTRA COST! Check back for updates for additional cities!
